Oof this is a tough question. I’d say I have been writing in the sense of writing non-fiction essays, as well as journaling my own thoughts and experiences and writing poetry, since about 6th grade, so about 8 or so years now? However, I only wrote fiction and fanfiction for a short amount of time and very sparsely. I’ve been creating character “backstories” since around 3rd grade but any full work of fiction by me was a rare occurance. My first fanfiction was like 4 years ago but I’ve only written 2 more since then 😅
When you finally finish a really difficult part in your writing/art/work/etc. and want to celebrate but then remember that the hardest part is still yet to come
When you’re too unfocused to do your homework and want to write a fanfic or draw fanart to procrastinate, but you’re too unfocused to do that as well
I think all of my friends who dabble or even make a living in some form of art can agree (although for me, I actually like comments better than shares).
If you’re ever working on your next piece and find yourself thinking, “Why should I even complete this or share it with others? It won’t hold a candle to the works of better artists.”
Hold on. It’s normal for there to be people who are much farther along in their art journey than you, as well as people who are new to their voyage. If you feel you’re at the “bottom of the totem pole,” you have to remind yourself that those artists that you think are “better than you”? They were in that exact same position before, and they probably still experience those feelings of inadequacy sometimes. And you know what they did?
They kept going. They kept publishing their stories, whether it be fanfiction or wholly personal works even if they didn’t get very many hits or karma. They kept posting to deviantart (or what have you) even when they were only lucky enough to even get one comment. They kept posting to Youtube or Soundcloud with no listeners. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been making art or how skilled you are in the present moment. Improvement stops the moment that you do, and so you must push onward and never give up.
