Y’ALL. The Tarot Cards for the Fool and Magician could give us a lot of insight into the characterizations of Seam and Jevil past our in-game knowledge. And it’s really, really sad in reference to Jevil specifically.
So apparently, the Fool Tarot Card is designated with the number zero, the number signifying limitless potential; the fool, having merely begun his journey through the Major Arcana, has the potential to be or do anything (sound familiar?). Additionally, according to Biddy Tarot, here is the description of the typical portrayal of the Fool Card:
So essentially, the Fool represents new beginnings, innocence, and purity, but unfortunately also naiveté, recklessness, and risk taking if reversed. Could Jevil have started out as an innocent, optimistic soul with limitless potential, and the stranger be representative of the cliff off which he falls, into a bottomless pit of unpredictability and chaos because of Jevil’s pure and shortsighted nature? That’s going to be my speculation from now on.
Now on to the Magician Tarot Card. The Magician is denoted with a 1–also associated with new opportunities and beginnings–and signifies manifestation and resourcefulness. It also represents a connection between the spiritual world and the physical world. Here is Biddy Tarot’s description of the Magician:
Something that blew my mind about this description is the items in front of the magician, because each one corresponds to a cartomancy suit: The sword is the spade suit, the cup is the heart suit, the pentacle is the diamond suit, and the wand is the club suit.
At best, the Magician Tarot Card represents a manifestation powerhouse and inspired action. Reversed, the Magician Card represents untapped potential and lack of clear direction, especially via lack of motivation or purpose (which is highly similar to what Seam seems to be going through). At the very worst, the Magician represents greed and manipulation because without the lack of higher purpose, one may focus only on personal desires (this doesn’t sound like Seam but who knows?). I think Seam fits the lack of focus because of how apathetic he seems and how little hope he has for the world. But I wonder if the Magician’s tie between the spiritual and physical realms is significant to Seam? Perhaps he is the link between the Dark World and the Lightners. Perhaps he is what brought them there? It’s all just theory though.
This is still relevant, plus I want to clarify that the modern tarots directly tie into cartomancy. As people have stated before, the red joker is the Magician and the black joker is the Fool.
Okay, I know there’s a lot of talk about cartomancy in regards to Jevil and Seam being the Jokers (black and red respectively) of the deck, but seriously pretty much all of the characters associated with a playing card line up personality-wise.
The diamond suit is associated with materialism and luxury. The Rudinns in the castle and King of Diamonds are fixated on their gold (even trading their beds for it), and the king even specifically asks the party to make sure his gold isn’t harmed at the end.
The heart suit is representative of emotions, love, and feelings. To spare the Hathy characters of the game, the main strategy is to flirt with them (which, of course, is an appeal to their emotions and flattery).
The clubs suit is a little harder to see, but Clover is the best example of it because it signifies passion and inspiration. How do you beat Clover? Specifically talk about her passions, like trees, boys, and sports.
Lastly, the spade suit signifies the tarot suit of Swords, and is associated with thoughts and communication. This one is difficult to see at first, but Lancer is a great example of this even at his young age. He wants to save his friends and doesn’t want his dad to get hurt either. So how does he accomplish this? Literally talks to every single resident Darkner and effectively persuades them to lock up the King.
Please feel free to add onto this or correct any errors, but I used this as a source for all of the information, and I wonder if by closely examining cartomancy it is possible to decipher even more characters, like the knight and queen (unless of course, they are related to chess instead). Also please note that cartomancy goes deeper than this, but this is based on the surface level information. Here’s another link for further reading.
